Tips To Consolidate Credit Card Debt
Consolidating debts incurred with credit cards is quite tough — and that’s an understatement. If you’ve decided to consolidate your debts, one of the first things you should do is reduce your expenses. For this, you must try to get the lowest interest rates possible. Next, it is important to have a proper pay-off plan in place so you don’t lose your way and fall back into debt.
Another thing you need to remember is that your plan of action shouldn’t only be to help you repay debt. You must be able to get back on your feet and have some credit balances in your bank accounts. As I mentioned earlier, credit card debt consolidation is quite tough, but it is also the fastest way to get back on track. Some of the things you could do with your credit cards are:
Transfer The Balance: This is the most common form of debt consolidation in the country today. If your credit rating is decent enough, you can consolidate debt from other cards onto one lower interest rate card. You can benefit a lot from the competition between card issuers who vie for your business. Some card issuers offer unbelievably low APRs for debt consolidation. You may also find offers with 0% interest rates for the first three or six months. Only one thing: don’t get carried away and don’t forget to read the fine print.
Use Your Home’s Equity: Have a home? Take a loan against it and pay off your debts. The interest rates may have risen of late, but they are still low enough.
Personal Debt Consolidation Loan: Some people don’t qualify for a low interest credit card and don’t have homes to borrow against. So, what do they do? If you belong to this category, you could try a personal debt consolidation loan. This loan does have a higher interest rate, but it does help you get out of the desperate situation you’ve put yourself into.
If even this option doesn’t work, you probably need to go in for debt settlement. What’s that? Well, we’ll deal with it next time.
