A Debt That’s Nearly Half A Town’s Budget
A criminal investigation in under way in Swansea, which is $430,000 in debt. The town owes the state the money from court fines and other fines dating back to 2004, according to Swansea’s financial records. Myrtlebeachonline.com reports:
Instead of paying the state, the town used the money to pay salaries and other bills, said Mike Burkhold, town administrator since 2004. "We had to make some hard decisions on who to pay first. We took care of employees first and then debts that were legal debts," said Burkhold, who wouldn’t specify what those legal debts were.
